An incubator and champion of Black and Brown theatre, based in Rochdale.
Rafia Hussain Productions is a new theatre company dedicated to producing and championing Black and Brown work. We are committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable theatre landscape, where the voices and stories of all communities are celebrated and amplified.
The two main strands of our work are:
Commissioning and producing Black and Brown work nationally and internationally.
Artist development in Rochdale through structured programmes, workshops and paid placements.
Rafia Hussain’s producing practice is a blend of activism, productions and artist development.
Rafia is currently a participant of Stage One’s Bridge The Gap programme for 2024-25. In 2024 she co-authored the ‘Producing Producers’ report - the culmination of a two year nationally significant research project to shape arts policy and develop the infrastructure for the training and development of racialised producers. In 2023 she was selected to be an IETM Global Connector from a global open call of 225. She is also the Strategic Producer at In Good Company (IGC). IGC is the artist development organisation for Midlands performance makers and produces the annual summer festival of contemporary work, Departure Lounge.
Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not. Rochdale is Rafia’s home town, the company’s base and has historically been under-invested in. We want to help change that by developing pathways into the sector and employment for people who live in Rochdale.
